Dr. Kim Chi Tran-Gulbrandsen holds a BSc (First Class Honours) in Chemistry and a
in Clinical Chemistry (Thesis title: Studies of Ferritin and Haemosiderin from β-Thalassaemia/Haemoglobin E Tissues) from Murdoch University, Perth, Australia.
Dr. Tran-Gulbrandsen started her career as a petroleum chemist with Caltex Oil Pty. Ltd. in Perth, Australia in 1986. After completing her Ph.D. in 1991, she worked as a research scientist at the French National Research Center (CNRS) in Paris, France before joining UNESCO. During her employment with UNESCO in 1993-1998 where she worked with project planning and management in the Science and Education Sectors in field offices (Thailand and Indonesia) as well as in Headquarters, Paris, France. In 1998-2004, she was appointed as associate professor in sustainable development at the Kwansei Gakuin University, Kobe, Japan where she taught undergraduate and Master programs in sustainable development, environmental management and environmental chemistry. During her appointment in Japan, she also taught at CINVESTAV and Universidad Marista, Merida, Mexico as a visiting professor (1999-2004) and carried out her research in integrated coastal zone management which resulted in several major publications.
In 2005, Dr. Tran-Gulbrandsen moved to Norway where she worked as research scientist at the Norwegian Water Research Institute (NIVA) and senior adviser at the Royal Norwegian Society for Development (Norges Vel). Then she was employed as a senior adviser at the International Section of the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) working with the development and management of international projects related to water resources management and hydropower development funded by Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NORAD, Innovation Norway, and EU (2009-20014). During her work with NVE, she was seconded to the Liberian Ministry of Lands, Mines, and Energy in Monrovia, Liberia for two years (2011-2013) as a senior resident adviser. Her main tasks during this mission were to develop and implement activities on gender mainstreaming in the energy sector and women’s empowerment through access to energy, energy uses and benefits, and on capacity building for the Ministry.
In May 2014, Dr. Tran-Gulbrandsen joined
, Stavanger, Norway as a project director. In May 2015-April 2016, she was Assistant Managing Director a.i. of
. Presently, she works as a project director in
and as the managing director of her consulting firm.
